Reader’s Question:

I need help in finding the best life insurance quote in South Dakota. Can you tell me where I can start getting information on life insurance quotes?

George

Sioux Falls, South Dakota

Before you search for the best life insurance quote in South Dakota, you need to know first how much your immediate family needs when they will lose you. Insurance companies or brokers use a financial-planning method called Capital Needs Analysis to estimate how much life insurance coverage one person needs. Following are the common factors considered in estimating how much life insurance you need:

  • Costs at death – funeral costs, final expenses, taxes
  • Unpaid debts – mortgage balance, college loans, bank loans
  • Current living expenses
  • If you have kids, their education cost
  • Years your immediate family needs to be supported

So you add them all up, and the result can be your basis for how much life insurance you should get for your beneficiaries.

The easiest way to estimate your life insurance coverage is to multiply your current annual income to at least 5 times.

After you determine an estimate of how much life insurance you need, you can then go online to find the best life insurance quote via online life insurance calculators which you can find in the insurers’ or broker agencies’ websites. These online calculators will ask the basic information about you which are: age, gender, weight, and tobacco use. It will also ask for the insurance amount you prefer, term, health class/category you belong to, and the mode of payment you prefer.

After you are done entering the required information into the online calculator, you can then hit the ‘Get Quote Now’ button. The website will then display different insurance companies’ premiums. Some websites will even include the insurance company ratings. The online calculator result is one way to find the best life insurance quote that fits your needs and budget.

Note that the results from online calculators are just estimates. So it’s best that you get opinions from insurance agents to help you finalize with the life insurance plan you will get.

Reader’s Question:

Auto insurance is not really required to have a car registered in South Dakota, is it?

Karen

Sioux Falls SD

Yes, that is true. Auto insurance in South Dakota is only one of the ways to show proof of financial responsibility, a requirement in registering a motor vehicle in the state.

Auto insurance in this state needs to meet the minimum coverage set by the state. To wit, the minimum required liability coverage includes:

  • $25,000 bodily injury liability for one person per accident
  • $50,000 bodily injury liability on more than two people per accident
  • $25,000 for Damages to Property
  • $25,000 per individual/max $50,000 per incident uninsured and underinsured coverage.

Auto insurance in South Dakota is unique in also requiring coverage for uninsured and underinsured coverage that is equivalent to bodily injury liability.

You would think that having all these coverage would make South Dakota a very expensive state in terms of premiums. In reality, auto insurance here was the second lowest in 2004 at only $587 on the average! And there are other things you could do to further bring down the premiums:

1. Shop around and ask for discounts from a lot of insurance companies that offer auto insurance in South Dakota.
2. Ask for discounts!
3. Install theft-protection devices for your car.
4. Try to insure several vehicles in one policy.
5. Maintain a clean driving record.
6. Enroll in drivers education.
7. Drive less.
8. Choose a higher deductible.

There are actually a lot of other things you could do. The trick is to lessen your risk, or at least lessen the risk associated with you and your driving patterns. To be sure that you get the lowest price on your premiums, talk to your insurance agents to find out what other things you can do to bring down your premiums. They are the experts when it comes to South Dakota auto insurance, and they would know some things that you generally would not think of.

Leased Car Insurance South Dakota SD

Reader’s Question:

I don’t own a car. I just lease one here in South Dakota. Do I still need auto insurance coverage?

Kirk

Sioux Falls, SD

To answer your question–yes, you will still need auto insurance coverage even if you don’t own a car and are just leasing one in South Dakota. The main issue here, really, is the car. Who’s going to take care of the car? When you drive your leased car, you know that it’s not your car. It’s still the auto dealer’s car. They, of course, would want to make sure that the car is taken care of even if somebody else is driving it. So, they would need you to have collision and comprehensive coverage.

Collision coverage will take care of things when you get in an accident like collide with another car or another object. The auto dealer will not shoulder the cost for any accident you caused while driving their car.

Comprehensive coverage covers the car if it gets damaged but the cause is not a road accident. If the car gets vandalized, your comprehensive coverage will pay for it. If it gets stolen, bursts into flames, comprehensive coverage will have your back. Hitting a deer or other animal is covered by this also.

In other words, if you lease a car, taking care of it is going to be your responsibility, and not anyone else’s.

Military Auto Insurance South Dakota SD

Reader’s Question:

I am 19-year-old resident of South Dakota contemplating military service. Should I cancel my present auto insurance if ever I get accepted in the military? I would probably store the car somewhere and get insurance when I come back.

Kevin

Rapid City, SD

Kevin, even if you won’t use your vehicle you are still required by law to renew the registration for your car annually (in most cases, this is usually the month of your birth). It would just be a bad decision to just keep your car somewhere and hope nothing happens to it. What if a natural disaster occurs in your area and by sheer bad luck causes damage your car? Another disadvantage is that a delay or lapse in insurance coverage will make an auto insurance company refrain from giving you insurance when you return from your tour of duty. So, canceling your present auto insurance without replacing it is not advisable. There are alternative ways to deal with this.

Many auto insurance companies don’t take into account the complexities of a client being deployed in the military, but fortunately some do. If budget is your primary motivation to take this course of action, there are companies which deal with military personnel all the time and will provide you tips on how to save some cash when you’re away. Discounts are usually given to those who work in the military. Patriotism, this is. Some auto insurance companies also try to maintain lower rates near military bases.

Teen Car Insurance South Dakota SD

Reader’s Question:

My teenage daughter just got her student license here in South Dakota, and did okay in her driving classes at school. Now, she wants to drive our car! Do I need to get separate car insurance for her?

Kate

Sioux Falls, SD

Hi, Kate, they grow up so fast don’t they? My suggestion to you would be to get on the phone with your car insurance agent in South Dakota and ask him about the specifics of your policy. For most car insurance providers, your daughter should automatically be covered under your car insurance policy. Since you have insured the vehicle, anyone who drives that vehicle should automatically be covered.

However, each car insurance company differs in their rules and specifications. Some will require you to have your daughter listed down under your policy as well to ensure her coverage. You need not get a separate policy for her since she doesn’t have her own car yet and she only has a learner’s permit and not a full fledged driver’s license.

Did you know that teenage accidents occur more than accidents involving adults? Not that I’m trying to scare you, but this may be a good time to review your car insurance policy and determine whether you have enough coverage. Take into account the costs you may have to pay for out of your own pocket should an accident happen. Most states only require liability insurance coverage, so if this is all you got, maybe you’d like to add some comprehensive insurance or collision damage insurance, as well.
